The reported remarks come just over a month after Trump celebrated the AHCA in the White House Rose Garden after it passed the House, calling the bill "a great plan" that was "very, very incredibly well-crafted" and promised "we're going to get this passed through the Senate".

The sources say the president did not specify what aspects of the bill he was characterizing.

Another GOP source with direct knowledge of the meeting told Fox that Trump told the group of 15 Republicans that they should build a "more generous" version of the American Health Care Act. Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican who attended the meeting, told reporters after leaving the White House.

President Donald Trump meeting with Senate Republicans to discuss the health care bill on Tuesday.

Mitch McConnell is trying to pull the same stunt that Speaker of the House Paul Ryan pulled with the American Health Care Act.

When asked to comment on Trump's remarks during the meeting, AshLee Strong, Ryan's spokeswoman said, "Congressional Republicans, with President Trump's support, are working to repeal and replace this bad Obamacare law that is harming Americans", according to the Associated Press.

If the party can get 50 senators on board, the Senate could pass a bill extremely rapidly without first needing to get the plan through a committee.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Monday spoke from the chamber floor in a bid to rouse the public to refocus its attention, criticizing his Republican counterparts for keeping their health care bill under wraps ahead of a potential vote before the July 4 congressional recess. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and more conservative members, Portman said, "No, but that wasn't the goal of it". Trump has previously threatened to cut off the payments as a way to bring about the collapse of the healthcare law.

"Well, I think we're not anxious so much about that as we are getting it together so we can get a majority to vote for it", said Hatch, a grandee who has served in the Senate for 40 years.

"We aren't stupid", one of two senior GOP Senate aides told Axios. "I appreciate what you're doing - to pass a phenomenal bill for the people of our country", Trump said with media in the room. Replacing his predecessor's signature health care law long has been one of Trump's main priorities. "With so much at stake, Republicans in Congress owe their constituents the same legislative transparency".

After his lunch, Trump will travel to Milwaukee, where he will meet with so-called Obamacare victims, speak about health care and address a fundraiser for Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.

Several provisions of the ACA, also known as Obamacare, allowed millions of Americans seeking substance-abuse treatment to gain coverage, including through an expansion of the Medicaid health program for the poor.
