Volvo's Polestar to launch electric performance auto later this year

Polestar is being positioned to be something along the lines of AMG by offering its own models and performance versions of Volvo cars. We can expect to see the first standalone Polestar model later this year. The 2017 XC60 and the S90 too are based on the same platform. CMA will form the basis of new smaller Volvos, including the new 40-series models: the XC40, S40 and V40.

With Polestar focussing on electric cars, that's bound to start rumours of a Geely Polestar involvement in Formula E, which Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson has hinted at in the past.

If Polestar could split itself between making performance gas cars and electric cars, that would really be something. However, Volvo's parent company Geely wants to make a change, converting Polestar into its own global performance brand focusing on, get this, electric cars. "It wants to replicate what Mercedes' AMG brand has done in producing its own bespoke AMG cars as well as modified Mercedes-AMG models", Auto Express reported on Monday. This will offer a range of models through vehicle sharing and subscription schemes as well as more conventional finance packages.

Geely also has purchased the London Taxi Company and is talking to niche sports-car maker Lotus about taking a majority stake. Like Volvo, Polestar will keep its headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden where its CEO is former Volvo UK boss Nick Connor.

In the pace of just one year, Polestar has produced about 10,000 unique tunings for Volvo and it led to the birth of the S60 Polestar and also the V60 Polestar.
