Jason Rubin, Naughty Dog co-founder and former president of fallen publisher THQ has highlighted the harsh development conditions Ukrainian developer 4A Games faced when working on Metro: Last Light.

In a GamesIndustry column, Rubin noted the industry’s secretive manner in regards to the struggles and plights experienced by developers. Whilst highlighting his desire to change that stance, he noted that the team at 4A would be happy with the reception received for Last Light.

“Let’s be honest: 4A was never playing on a level field,” he said. “The budget of Last Light is less than some of its competitors spend on cut scenes, a mere 10 percent of the budget of its biggest competitors. Yet it is lauded for its story and atmosphere.

“It is built on a completely original and proprietary second-generation engine that competes with sequels that have stopped numbering themselves, with more engineers on their tech than 4A has on the entire project. Yet its tech chops are never in question.”

Rubin also spoke of 4A’s development environment, claiming the entire studio “would fit easily in the (underutilized) gym at EA Los Angeles’ offices.”

He added: “As undeniably fantastic as competitor BioShock Infinite may be, the team was given whatever resources they needed to make the title. At the same time, 4A’s staff sat on folding wedding chairs, literally elbow to elbow at card tables in what looks more like a packed grade school cafeteria than a development studio.”

According to Rubin, 4A staff members found themselves having to smuggle dev-kits and high-end PCs into the country when needed.

Concluding his piece, the former THQ boss labelled Last Light a “stunning achievement” before adding further claims in the comments section.

“Whether the conditions are “horrible” or merely “worse” than North America and Western Europe is kind of irrelevant. I don’t believe most North American and Western European developers would accept employment under 4A’s work conditions.

“4A overcame more than just incredible budget differences with their competitors. More than just differences in work environment. More than just a challenging relationship with THQ. They overcame ALL of these.”

Andrew Prokhorov, a creative director at 4A has since added his word on the matter.

Metro: Last Light is available now on PC, Xbox 360 and PC in North America and arrives throughout Europe tomorrow – Friday, May 17. Catch a launch trailer below.

Pirates, assassinations – duh – and sharks aplenty, the new trailer is a moody, action-packed affair with Captain Edward Kennedy on narration duties.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is due for November 1 release on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, with PS4 and other next generation console versions to follow. Check it out below.

Following a Twitter post questioning the possibility of a follow-up to the Wii U-exclusive first-person zombie experience, Caro stated: “The team is working hard on a prototype. It’s too soon to tell you more.”

Whilst that is good news for fans, Caro was later keen to highlight that a prototype may never materialise to form a full game – as is the case with most video game projects at said production stage.

ZombiU launched alongside Nintendo’s latest home console back in November 2012 and, whilst it has experienced its fair share of positive feedback from critics and survival horror fans, sales weren’t mind-boggling. There’s always the chance of a sequel going multiplatform, though.

Thanks, Game Informer.

It’s been revealed that 15 upcoming EA titles are set to skip Wii U release due to the console’s incompatibility with DICE’s Frostbite 3 engine.

In a post on Twitter, DICE technical director Johan Andersson has said the current Frostbite 2 engine has struggled to run well on Nintendo’s latest home console, revealing that the developer has abandoned efforts to see its next tech iteration working with the system.

Meanwhile, Stefan Boberg – another of DICE’s technical directors working on Frostbite 3 – has noted the 15 in-development titles using the engine in a post on NeoGAF.

All in all, the lists consists of Battlefield 4, Dragon Age 3, Mass Effect 4, Need For Speed 2013, Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel, Plants Vs. Zombies TF2 and Command & Conquer, as well as unknown new IP (potentially new Star Wars titles) from both Visceral and Bioware.

The news will, without doubt, be a big blow for Nintendo and its Wii U hardware to take due to EA’s firm position amidst the industry’s leading publishers.

Game designer Patrice Desilets claims to have been fired by Ubisoft just months after returning as part of the publisher’s THQ Montreal purchase.

An initial statement from Ubisoft noted that Desilets had left the studio after “good faith discussions” proved to be “inconclusive,” but the man himself says differently.

“Contrary to any statements made earlier today, this morning I was terminated by Ubisoft,” Desilets claimed when speaking to Polygon. “I was notified of this termination in person, handed a termination notice and was unceremoniously escorted out of the building by two guards without being able to say goodbye to my team or collect my personal belongings.

“This was not my decision. Ubisoft’s actions are baseless and without merit. I intend to fight Ubisoft vigorously for my rights, for my team and for my game.”

Desilets – one of the leading creative minds behind Assassin’s Creed – departed Ubisoft firstly back in 2010 to head THQ Montreal.

Three years on, and the January 2013 THQ bankruptcy asset auction saw Desilets return as Ubisoft took control of the studio and its 1666 and Underdog projects.
